The Much Overdue Update

The Much Overdue Update

Seemingly our energies have been focused on writing songs and not so much writing this blog. If anyone is really wanting for more insight on what we’re up to, FB friending me (Rosanne Baker Thornley) or following me on Instagram (same name) is where you’ll find the day-to-day, play-by-play. And while there has been years of accumulating do’s, we’re only diving in a tad here to share some of the more recent highlights. We’ve been filling the years, months, days and hours with great sessions, and writing with an interesting and diverse range of talented artists. As well, we’ve been building our own RBT | NE catalogue and casting songs into the sync stream. We’ve had the good fortune to have had our artists release songs, as well as had songs of ours placed, released and climbing the charts. We’ve also been photographing and video’ing artists as well as introducing them to industry in-the-know’ers who are helping them find, build and step onto their career paths.

First in the news is the launch of our new initiative “That First Song”. Quite honesty, the deliverable is what we’ve been doing for the past 4 years, however, it seems it more immediately communicates what it is we do. You can find the site at www.thatfirstsong.com. In fact the TFS site will give you a good sense of the latest music, videos and artists we’ve been focused on.

Next up, “Have A Little Faith” written with Juno winner Carlos Morgan. Sitting at #2 on the Euro Indie Chart “Have A Little Faith” was written near the beginning of our forming the RBT | NE Partnership. This tune exemplifies how every song has it’s own path and timeline.

In the songwriting competition arena, we won the Imsta Festa Global Songwriting Completion in Chicago with our song “Tell Me” performed by North and I. This competition had one winner from each of the six participating cities (Toronto, Chicago, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Seoul). We then all moved on in the competition towards the Grand Prize with each regional winner having to write a song using the title “Hurts Like Brand New Shoes”. Lol. And while the Grand Prize Winner, was just recently announced to be from Seoul - we’re grateful for the new song this experience found us.

We were invited by The Songwriters Association of Canada to participate in their PRO CO LAB, which is a live web-series highlighting professional co-writing teams. A live stage, North and I (well mostly North lol) talked about songwriting as we dove into writing a song.

Just hitting the waves is “Me Without You” a song we co-wrote with singer, songwriter Andrew Allen that was picked up and released by Warner Music Canada / Inside Pocket Artist “Havelin”. Produced by the infamous Gavin Brown, with Havelin, Gavin Brown and Mike Bilenki jumping in on the writing, “Me Without You” can be found pretty much anywhere you listen to music.

All in all, it’s been a very full and very busy few years, and we’re having fun. And so, with a view to posting a bit more than we have been (because even one more post is one more post from where we were)  … thanks for the read, talk soon.

Cheers, Rosanne | North

Stoking the fire.

Above is the visual depiction from Reverbnation's crowd review of our song "Anyway" written with and performed by Mikalyn Hay. 7/10  indicates a high quality track, "Anyway" came in at a glowing 8/10 and will be featured sometime in the next few weeks on Reverbnations' home page.

And at a year and a half into RBT | NE, we're beginning to gain some momentum as our songs find their way to the airwaves (June Garber "Underneath the Jacaranda Tree" and "Unbroken") and early breakout singles (Carlos Morgan "Have A Little Faith") to online (Mikalyn Hay "Anyway" and Kelly Heeley "In Over My Head"), to possible adopters placing holds on songs from our catalogue (Didn't I; What Are We Fighting For; Talk Like That; Look Up; Live Like That). It's also great to see the videos North has been pulling together for some of the artists we're working with.

North and I are extremely lucky to spend so much of our time consumed in the creative energy of songwriting and music. And although we both regularly burn our candles on all sides, the crazy-of-it-all is good. It's also been busy on the performance side of the things for North with his new solo album "One of the Lucky Ones". Piling his family into his van this summer, North set out across Canada on his annual trip to BC, however this year there were numerous stops along the way with North doing an early release tour - the official cd release is October 15th in Ottawa. The album has a few RBT | NE songs that made the cut, lol - "TURN" which was North and my first co-write 2 -1/2 years ago; "LOVE LIKE THAT" an ISC finalist placing top 200 out of 18,500 songs in the 2015 International Songwriting Competition; and "LIVING OUT LOUD" a no holds barred song that explicitly tells you just how that's done, and features the stellar harmonica playing of Toronto legend Jerome Godboo.

We've had a full and fantastic year so far, with many new opportunities ahead of us. All the while we've been happily converting artists into great friends along the way, falling into the comfort of familiarity and writing song after song with them. We're also doing more full on song production for artists with our talented producer Johnny Simmen on board.

We are in awe of the talent that is standing in the wings waiting for their time. All good here :)

Cheers,
Rosanne | North

It all started with a song. In fact, 18,500 songs.

We're happy and proud to announce that RBT | NE is a semi-finalist in the 2015 International Songwriting Competition (ISC) with our song "Love Like That". The ISC received more than 18,500 entries with the semi-finalists making up the top 10% of all category entires.

We are joined in the 'Adult Album Alternative' category by approximately 80 other songwriters from around the world including - Bulgaria, Australia, USA, Trinidad / Tobago, England, Croatia, Israel, Denmark, Romania, Sweden, Chile and Wales, as well as a handful from Canada (Winnipeg, Janetville, Regina). It's an honour (and is very exciting) to be a part of this global community of talented songwriters. Over the next few weeks the semi-finalists will be narrowed down to the finalists, who will be sent to ISC's celebrity judges to select a winner. Fingers crossed! We will keep you posted! To see the complete list of semi-finalists, please visit -  http://www.songwritingcompetition.com/semi-finalists.html

2016. Strings changed, laptop ready.

Stepping into year 2. A newly updated website, driven in part by North shrinking by 50'ish lbs, while at the same time the expanding accomplishments of RBT | NE with news to share (am loving the 'In The Room' section and the bright eyes of the artists we’re working with).

It really is remarkable the amount of ground we covered in the short span of a year, the doors that were opened and the many new faces we added to our team.

As you may (or may not) know, North and I write in a variety of styles that includes singer / songwriter, pop, rock, folk, ac, country, jazz, r&b, as well as a genre I have dubbed as ‘north’. With all the writing we do, there are often songs in the 'north' genre that, of course, fit perfectly with North’s voice and vibe. So, with very positive feedback we've been hearing about these songs from the ‘ears’  in the industry as well as radio 'noses' who know and are loving North’s voice on these songs, we've decided that it makes total sense for North to record and release an album that will feature many of our songs. North currently performs out of Ottawa with his band 'My Favourite Tragedy' (MFT),  More news to share on the album journey, soon  ...

Also underway is a collaborative co-writing group I envisioned that came to life near the end of last year.  "THE COLLABOR8TORS". A group of eight talented, focused writers, brought together specifically to collaborate on great new songs together and to share their experience of the process. And so in November, gathered in my living room were the founding songwriters - Patrick Ballantyne, David Leask, Ambre McLean, Colin MacDonald, Maddy Rodriguez, Ken Yates, North and me. In a very basic approach, we drew names and corresponding lyrics for each writer from a hat, which determined the first 4 collaborating teams - and we left with a date to regroup at the end of January with our 4 newly co-written songs. There will be more news to share on this ... soon.

And so, as we plan our plan, change our strings, power-up my imac, North's iPad and our iphones, we dive wholeheartedly into 2016 - psyched and ready for a new year!

Cheers,
Rosanne | North

BACK ON THE GRID

Seriously, our blog silence is not an indication of what’s been happening, but is rather a by-product of just how busy we are.     It’s awesome all the writing we’re doing and so is all the activity that's circling around us.

Beyond the hours we spend weekly writing via the enabling, but somewhat temperate technology of Skype, North jets in once, or possibly twice a month from Ottawa for our manic 72-hour sessions. The chill vibe of the house, Diesel at our feet, lazy conversations, late night writes, and an endless supply of Perrier  all contribute to the songwriting atmosphere which has resulted   in many (many) new RBT | NE songs, with literally dozens of song starts calling to be finished. Also ‘in the room’ with us have been some amazing artists we’ve been writing with. From a bit of revolution rock for Lyric Dubee, a touch of country for Joan Kennedy and Deanna Ouellette, a south African infused jazz song for Ms. June Garber, some heartfelt soul for Carlos Morgan, to singer, songwriter leaning pop songs for Kelly Heeley … we’re both truly driven in this. As well, in response to some artists need for a turn-key solution, we are also producing and recording the songs we’re writing with them, with Johnny Simmen who is a part of our team.

We’re inspired and energized about what lays ahead on the songwriting, and performing horizon. More on that later ;)       Making new friends in the artists who are loving the space we     slip into and in finding songs that truly reflect what each artist feels in their hearts and in our helping put a voice to that  - well that is pure fuel for this songwriting team.

Cheers,
Rosanne  |  North

READY. SET. GO.

Hi and welcome to our officially launching RBT | NE and our new website. A partnership that has grown out of some great writing together, we look forward to sharing some highlights and insights into our collective songwriting journey - including where our songs are landing and the impact they’re making. As well, when we’re at liberty to do so, we’ll share a glimpse of who is ‘in the room’ and the session experiences.

We’ve got much on the go and are happily writing with some very talented artists, as well as working with some awesome producers and industry folk. Added to that, we’re squeezing quite a bit of songwriting into the moments in-between to continue building our own song catalogue.

Exciting times ahead! But for now, just a simple hello - happy to have you hear :) We’ll keep you posted.

Cheers,
Rosanne  |  North
